After every major hurricane, hundreds of thousands of vehicles are flooded. Many of these are cleaned up and sold to unsuspecting buyers across the country. Here's how to protect yourself.

5-Minute Flood Check

1. Smell Test: Get in the car with the windows up. A musty, moldy smell is a major red flag.
2. Check the Carpet: Feel under the seats and carpets. Look for water stains, mud, or new carpet in an older car.
3. Inspect the Trunk: Remove the spare tire and check for water lines or rust in the wheel well.
4. Look at Electrical Connections: Check under the dashboard for green corrosion on connectors.
5. Check the Headlights: Look for water marks or fogging inside the lens housings.

Always Run a Vehicle History Report

A VIN check can reveal if a car has a flood or salvage title. But beware - title washing can hide this history, which is why a physical inspection is also critical.
