The Flood Car Problem
After every major hurricane, hundreds of thousands of vehicles are flooded. Many of these are cleaned up and sold to unsuspecting buyers across the country. Here's how to protect yourself.
5-Minute Flood Check
- Smell Test: Get in the car with the windows up. A musty, moldy smell is a major red flag.
- Check the Carpet: Feel under the seats and carpets. Look for water stains, mud, or new carpet in an older car.
- Inspect the Trunk: Remove the spare tire and check for water lines or rust in the wheel well.
- Look at Electrical Connections: Check under the dashboard for green corrosion on connectors.
- Check the Headlights: Look for water marks or fogging inside the lens housings.
Always Run a Vehicle History Report
A VIN check can reveal if a car has a flood or salvage title. But beware - title washing can hide this history, which is why a physical inspection is also critical.
